ORANGE COUNTY INTERSCHOLASTIC
ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
VOLLEYBALL BY-LAWS
Adopted June 1, 2005

1. The current year NCAA Volleyball Rules, NYSPHSAA Rules and Regulations and the following OCIAA league rules shall apply.
a. A match consists of: 3 out of 5 games for Varsity
3 out of 3 games for JV
All games to 25 points.

b. Junior Varsity matches will be played prior to the Varsity matches.

c. Warm-up procedure for first match:
First level to play: (JV or Varsity)
5 minute stretch
10 minutes court (shared)
6 minutes court-one team
6 minutes court-second team

d. Warm-up procedure for second match
Second level to play: (JV or Varsity)
No stretch time (do this during previous match)
10 minutes court (shared)
6 minutes court-one team
6 minutes court-second team

e. If the visiting team arrives late, the first level playing must be given time to warm-up (10 minutes). The home team should have already warmed-up and should be ready to play.

f. More than 12 members are permitted on a squad.
18 substitutes and use of a Libero player.

g. Players will be limited to participate only at the JV or Varsity level on any given day.

2. Schools will provide a minimum of 6 balls for visiting teams to warm-up.

3. Unsportsmanlike Conduct (All Levels):

a. When a coach is ejected from a game please refer to NYSPHSAA Handbook # 27 Sportsmanship.

b. When a player(s) receives a red/yellow card and is ejected or disqualified from a match for fighting or unsportsmanlike conduct, the following action will be taken:

(1) First red/yellow card - that player(s) cannot attend or participate in the next scheduled match.

(2) Second red/yellow card - that player(s) cannot attend or participate in the next two scheduled matches.

(3) Third red/yellow card - that player(s) cannot attend or participate in any remaining scheduled matches including sectionals or any higher level competition.

a. The official giving a red/yellow card will notify the OCIAA Athletic Coordinator, prior to 12 noon the following day of the name(s) of the player(s) and the type of infraction(s).

b. The coach of the player or players receiving the red/yellow card will notify his/her Athletic Director. The Athletic Director will then contact the OCIAA Athletic Coordinator’s Office to confirm that the player or players will not be allowed to participate in that school’s next scheduled match or matches as required above.

c. A player(s) that is red/yellow carded, will not be allowed to be present at the site of any match that player(s) has been disqualified from participating in (home or away).

d. For unsportsmanlike violation that occur during the OCIAA season, penalties will carry over into sectional play. NYSPHSAA unsportsmanlike conduct rules will apply after the completion of the league season.

4. Only Varsity coaches will complete rating cards and send them through their Athletic Director to OCIAA Athletic Coordinator within two weeks. Rating cards should reflect top/bottom official assignment for varsity contest only.

5. There will be two divisions: Each division will recognize a champion based on the win/lose record within their division. In the event of a tie the following will be used to determine a champion.
1. Head to head between teams that are tied.
2. If teams are still tied co-champions will be declared.
3. If more than two teams are tied (division record) teams will be declared co-champions.

6. Awards (Varsity Only)

Plaques: 2 Division Champions (Team)
OCIAA Patches: Each individual school may purchase their own patches if they choose to do so.

7. Modified Volleyball Rules:
a. Warm-up procedure will be (5-5-5-4-4).
Modified:
5 minute stretch for visiting team

5 minutes court-one team

5 minutes court-other team

4 minute court-one team

4 minute court-other team

* Coaches would have the option to have 9 minutes court time rather than switching if agreed before beginning.

The following b, c, and d will be used with Sectional approval.

b. A match consists of 3 out of 3 games for modified with all games being played to 25 points. The modified “A” squad will play game one, “B” squad in game two, and any eligible players may play in game three.

c. Each player is allowed two (2) tosses for service.

d. There will be no tape line, however, modified players may step one step into the court for service.
e. Libero player will not be used.
